Obituary

James Ruben Tapplin, known affectionately as Ruben, passed away on May 29, 2026, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, hard work, and love for his family and community. Born on January 25, 1942, in Eads, Tennessee, Ruben’s life journey was one of steadfast commitment to those he held dear and to the work that defined his career.

A member of the Bellgrove M.B. Church in Oakland, Ruben’s faith played a significant role throughout his life. He received his education through the Fayette County Schools, laying the foundation for a life rooted in strong values and a sense of purpose. As a self-employed professional, Ruben found fulfillment working with concrete, a craft that symbolized his practical nature and his ability to build lasting structures both literally and figuratively.

Ruben was the beloved son of the late Willie Tapplin, Jr. and Julia Catherine Harris. His departure marks the end of an era, but his memory is lovingly sustained by those who survive him. He is survived by his devoted wife of thirty-eight years, Mary Louise Taylor-Tapplin, whose partnership was a pillar of strength throughout his life. Together, they raised five children: James L. Tapplin, Michael A. Tapplin ( LeDonnna), Timothy Tapplin (Wendy), Darron Tapplin, and Christy M. Tapplin. The close-knit family extended further to include twenty-one grandchildren and twenty-eight great-grandchildren, all of whom stand as a testament to Ruben’s enduring influence and the deep roots he planted.

Ruben also leaves behind two brothers, Willie B. Tapplin (and his wife, Cynthia) and Jimmy Lloyd Tapplin, along with six sisters: Dorothy Tapplin, Cora Branner, Julia Taylor (and her husband, Freddie), Pearlie Murrell (and her husband, Henry), Mary B. Norman, and Gloria Harris (and her husband, Jessie). Their collective presence speaks to a wide circle of familial love and support, which no doubt provided comfort during Ruben's life and in the days following his passing.

The life of James Ruben Tapplin was characterized by a humble strength and a generous heart. His work ethic and commitment to family serve as an enduring example to all who knew him. As family and friends gather to remember Ruben, they celebrate a life well-lived, rich in devotion, resilience, and the simple but profound bonds of home and kinship. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
